Cracks in the Landscape

2011

The different propositions of the Cracks in the Landscape series consist of work done in and on the Château de Rentilly and its surrounding park. Executed for the collective exhibition Chambres sourdes, shown between February and May 2011, these works establish various kinds of correspondences with the installation February 2011 – Return to Marienbad, which was on show at the same time in one of the castle rooms. While playing on the history of the estate and of the people who have lived there, these pieces open the spectrum of references to Alain Resnais and Alain Robbe-Grillet’s film onto other classics by the cinematographer and, most especially, to fantasy films (including Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining) without making use of video images.

Discreet creations likely to go completely unnoticed by visitors, these micro-works operate together in a network and endeavor to scramble temporal information within the exhibition. In keeping with the themes developed in the curatorial project and employed in Last Year at Marienbad, these works reverberate with the inchoate cries that shake its foundations.

There is something here that relates directly to childhood, feeding off of its pervasive fears.
