Buried Love

2020

Video loop, 22 mn 45.

Where Portrait of Emilia – Prophecy manifests an obvious form of mobility, of floating between two pictorial sources, Buried Love, which is based on the late painting of Caravaggio Sleeping Cupid, works on the contrary on a principle of fixing the character in the center of the image.

Unlike the other video editings in the series, apart from Medusa, it does not proceed by chain of a series of details destructuring the painting which serves as a reference, but imposes the latter as an immutable filter plated directly on the film excerpt. Like the tip of an arrow, the painting anchors the representation in the depth of the frame. It imposes a form of gravity which prevents any outcome or movement of escape and seals the inevitable destiny of the character. Covering Emilia, like the shovels of earth that are launched on her, it takes her into the grave that will eventually bury her.

The falling asleep of the caravagesque figure contributes at the same time to paralyze the representation, causing an effect of numbness of the figures which gradually plunge them into the heart of the night.
