What is a copy? A fake? Rarely. An imitation? Sometimes. An interpretation? Most often. A copy is a more or less faithful reproduction of an original work of art, made for a purpose that may or may not be explicitly stated. One can copy a work for very different reasons: to learn to paint or sculpt, to imitate a famous artist, to mock a well-known work by appropriating it—or, on the contrary, to pay homage to it. Sometimes, an artist even copies their own works.
The exhibition explores this idea of copying, which has existed since Antiquity and whose popularity has never waned, ranging from reproduction to appropriation.
